Holy Sacraments

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Canberra offers key sacraments within its spiritual community. Embracing Orthodox traditions, it hosts the Divine Liturgy, weddings, and baptisms, providing a sanctuary for faith and life's milestones.

There are seven sacraments, known as the Holy Mysteries, which include Baptism, Chrismation, Eucharist, Confession, Holy Unction, Marriage and Holy Orders. Read more below on each one. 

Certificates

Ecclesiastical Certificates serve as a meaningful record of spiritual milestones within the Orthodox tradition.

 

A small fee is payable for the preparation and filing of Ecclesiastical Certificates. ​

Divorce

Divorce is a reality of relationship breakdowns. It is permitted under certain conditions as an act of mercy and a means for those involved to find peace and spiritual well-being.

 

An ecclesiastical divorce may be granted after a civil Decree Absolute has been given.  

Other Sacraments

Other Sacraments are an important part of the faithful. They include Holy Eucharist, Holy Orders and Holy Unction. 

Marriage

Marriage is a Sacrament, a Mystery of the Orthodox Church, through which the union of man and woman is sanctified by God.

Death & Mourning

Death is viewed as the entry to eternal life where the soul awaits resurrection and the hope of reuniting with the body of in Christ's presence.

 

Funeral services are a profound expression of faith, reflecting the belief in God's infinite mercy and the hope for the deceased's salvation and eternal life.

Important Feasts

The most important feast days include Easter, also known as Pascha, which is celebrated as the resurrection of Christ, and the Twelve Great Feasts, which honor significant events in the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

Baptism

Baptism is a joyous celebration where one is lovingly embraced into the Greek Orthodox faith. 

The sacrament was instituted by Christ Himself. The Baptismal service conducted today contains several components. 

Confession & Communion

Confession is a sacrament of repentance and reconciliation with God, while communion is the receiving of the Eucharist, embodying unity with Christ and the Church.

Both require spiritual preparation and a process of self-examination to be meaningful and worthy. 

Holy Week

Holy Week in the Greek Orthodox Church is a profound and sacred period marked by solemn rituals and services, culminating in the celebration of Christ's resurrection.
